In the Baptist backwoods of the Bible Belt, the beleaguered Turpin
family proves that living and dying in the South are seldom tidy and
always hilarious. Despite their earnest efforts to pull themselves
together for their father's funeral, the Turpin's other problems keep
overshadowing the solemn occasion: Firstborn Ray-Bud drinks himself
silly as the funeral bills mount; Junior, the younger son, is
juggling financial ruin, a pack of no-neck monster kids, and a wife
who suspects him of infidelity in the family car; their sister,
Delightful, copes with death as she does life, by devouring junk
food; and all the neighbors add more than two cents. As the situation
becomes fraught with mishap, Ray-Bud says to his long-suffering wife,
"When I die, don't tell nobody. Just bury me in the backyard and tell
everybody I left you." Amidst the chaos, the Turpins turn for comfort
to their friends and neighbors, an eccentric community of misfits who
just manage to pull together and help each other through their hours
of need, and finally, the funeral.

CHARACTERS

Bud Turpin: Elderly father who dies in the first scene. 50-80 (Will
likely double another role.)

Raynelle Turpin: Bud's widow. Christian, family woman who tells it
like it is in a quiet unassuming manor. 50-80

cannot carry to term. Motherly type who tries to take care of
everyone. Late 30's

Junior Turpin: Bud & Raynelle's younger son. Completely broke because
of a bad business decision. Recently had an affair that his wife
finds out about at the beginning of the play. 30's

Suzanne Turpin: Junior's wife. Completely broke because of Junior's
bad business decision. Could have been a professional singer but
married instead. A bit passive/aggressive in personality. Sings a
hymn at the funeral 30's

Marguerite: Bud's sister. Devoutly and aggressively Christian. Very
loud and controlling of her offspring and of any situation. 50-80

Royce: Marguerite's son. Out of work with no future plans which his
mother never lets him forget. More of an observer than a doer. 30's

Delightful: Bud & Raynelle's daughter. Overweight young woman who
never really was allowed to grow up. Eats constantly and speaks only
when spoken to. 20-30

Reverend Hooker: parish minister. A minister tired of ministering.

kept alive by oxygen masks and medication. 60-80 (Will likely double

pregnant just by looking at a man. All of her children are named
after famous actors. 20's (Will likely double another role.)

Clyde: Ray-Bud's boss. Knows exactly how he wants to die. First
priority is to "take care of our own" 40's (Will likely double another role.)

the food at the luncheon. Bit of a gossip. 30-50

Olympia Theatre needs a Cyrano now!!

Hello all,
Artists Rep just received this call for emergency casting replacement for ther role of Cyrano from Halequin Productions in Olypmia:

We are a small professional theater in Olympia Washington and we are producing Cyrano de Bergarac in early October. Calamity has befallen our Cyrano though and he has broken his leg in several places, yikes! So we find ourselves needing to find another fabulous Cyrano on super short notice, rehearsals begin in 3 weeks, double yikes!!

I thought it might be worth a try to write folks at all the regional theaters to see if you had any ideas on names of actors who you may have worked with, or have auditioned for you, that might be available, interested, skilled enough to audition for the role Cyrano, i.e. have an eloquent command of language and are great at sword fighting.
The person we are replacing was not equity, but we can do a guest artist equity contract and provide housing. So if you have any equity or non equity casting ideas, please, please send us any ideas you may have.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!
