SAG - Punk actress (17 - 20) (Portland)

PDX,

I know you want an excuse to dye your hair. Perhaps get a really funky cut? And when people ask you why you can shrug and say, "Oh, I had to get it done for this series I'm shooting."

We are still looking for young (17 - 20) women to audition for the role of Alysa for "Suburban Apocalypse", shooting here in Portland.

Paying gig. SAG New Media agreement. Teaser shooting in the next few weeks and episodes shooting in the fall.

Interested?

Auditions are this Saturday (July 28) by invitation only.

Here's the character description:

Alysa - Punk hair and a sense of fashion held over from the late 80's make up the colorful plumage of Alysa. Wise cracking, loud and often abrasive Alysa has her own way forcing her way through the world. Speaking in rhymes and alliterations is Alysa's way of speaking: as creative and unique as her appearance. A hard, crusty and seldom bathed exterior disguises her emotional core. With her friend Shelly she's often sweet and corny.

Thanks.

Reply to:  Send an email to hostetler.casting@earthlink.net with "Suburban Apocalypse - Alysa" in the subject line.

Compensation: SAG New Media Agreement

Casting call for web series - SAG New Media contract

Hi PDX,

I am casting for a new web series called Suburban Apocalypse which will shoot this fall in Portland.

We are currently casting three roles for a short that will be shot in early August. The three characters cast in the short will also be featured in the series.

This is a paid gig, producing under the SAG New Media contract.

There is no ethnic restriction on any of these roles.

(feel free to forward this email to anyone you think might be interested.)

The roles are:

Shelly - (15-17) Quirky and awkwardly brilliant behind her glasses, Shelly has a warm and inviting personality. She spends much of her time reading and painting pictures that are all really quite bad. Her artistic failures have never seemed to effect her creative enthusiasm. Dedicated to Alysa with all her heart, they share a special connection that if the years allowed could grow into something more than BFF's.

Alysa - (17-19) Punk Rock, towering mohawk (or other punk style) and a sense of fashion held over from the late 80's make up the colorful plumage of Alysa. Wise cracking, loud and often abrasive Alysa has her own way of forcing through the world. Speaking in rhymes and alliterations is Alysa's way of speaking: as creative and unique as her appearance. A hard, crusty and seldom bathed exterior disguises her emotional core. With Shelly she's often sweet and corny.

NOTE - Hoping for an actor who already has a Mohawk (or Punk hairstyle) or would be willing to alter their current style for the shoot.

Mason (20-23) A suburban boy who thinks he's "gangster", Mason takes on the roll of dictator by fault in a world devoid of any elders. Pants hanging half off his ass, hat on crooked, and energy drink in hand Mason takes on his world with the enthusiasm and thoughtfulness of a cage fighter.

Auditions are by invitation only and will be on Saturday, July 28 in Portland.

Thanks.

- Bruce H.

About the Film & Director
"The Curio" is  a feature-length filmic memoir masquerading as an uncomfortable comedy about a recent divorcee confronting a future as a misfit loner. The film weaves scripted material, footage from 'family films' and scenes from a fictional documentary that interviews family and friends into a comedic yet poignant portrait of one man's existential crisis. Littered with dark humor, stunning Portland vistas and cast completely of Portlanders; you will be left with the sweet swell of satisfaction having taken part in this lil' gem when it becomes a Portland Classic.
Dicky Dahl sang for the art-pop band Stratotanker in New York City in the 90's, planted trees while living amongst the Mayans of highland Guatemala, and herded goats in the Spanish Sierra Nevada before turning to work on various film projects in Portland, Oregon. He co-wrote and produced 'The Ballad of Ramblin' Jack,' a documentary of cowboy folksinger and raconteur Ramblin' Jack Elliott that won the Special Jury Prize for Artistic Achievement at the 2000 Sundance Film Festival and received wide theatrical distribution. Recently, he shot & directed the acclaimed video for 'Black Hills Gold' by the band Dolorean.

Pin-Up Retro Style Models Needed (Portland-Pearl)

We are looking for models to appear in our latest calendar project. The concept is a vintage style of pin-up girls so we are seeking those types of models whether they are professional or amateur as we are looking for the right fit and look towards the artists concept. Keep in mind, that there are varying body type and our photographers initial concept sketches range from very slender to more of a buxom style figure. We do have great hair stylist and makeup staff to help you achieve the desired look.

We offer $125 for the initial shoot and then a fixed percentage of profit based on calendar sales. Our previous 2010 project netted each of the twelve models $2168, many of who were amateur status and two have already secured their spot on this project. A bonus of $250 if you are selected as the cover and an increased percentage of profit sharing. As noted in the title, this concept is likely a three calendar deal so if we use you on a continuing basis for other projects, your base payment for the shoot is increased by 20% each time. We find that when the models are familiar with the process, the subsequent shoots are more efficient and productive, so we reward that professionalism.

Those interested should email two headshots and two full body shots for initial consideration. A group interview will be held a local and reputable photographer's studio in which we are partnering with in two weeks.

ABOUT THE PLAY
It’s 1928, and the optimism between World Wars is in full swing. Based on the novel by Vicki Baum and subsequent MGM feature film, the musical captures the high life and optimism of Berlin in 1928. The hotel brings together rich characters, both wealthy and poor, where “one life ends while another begins,” and “one heart breaks while another beats faster.”

Music and lyrics for Grand Hotel are by Robert Wright & George Forrest. The book is by Luther Davis and is based on Vicki Baum's novel Grand Hotel. The show is by arrangement with Turner Broadcasting Co. Owner of the motion picture Grand Hotel.  Additional music and lyrics by Maury Yeston. Bruce Blanchard directs Lakewood’s production, a premiere for the Portland area.

Role Breakdowns

All roles are open and all receive remuneration.

Colonel-Doctor Otternschlag: Male, 50s-60s, grievously wounded by gas and shrapnel and grotesquely torn in body and soul by the ravages of World War I, a cynical ruined man, a morphine addict and the narrator of the play. Sing but does not dance. Character voice, nuanced, mid-range.

Erik: Male, 20s-early 30s, an intelligent, young assistant concierge, ambitious, sensitive, about to start a family. Tenor or high lyric baritone.

Hermann Preysing: Male, late 30s-50s, the General Director of a large textile mill. He is an honest businessman slowly descending into illegal compromise as his company drifts dangerously toward bankruptcy. Sings but does not dance. Generally mid-range. At close, F# in staff. Could be “spoken.”

Flaemmchen: Female, early 20s, a very attractive young woman with theatrical ambitions but weighed down with a dark secret. She longs to escape her limited and corruptive existence and get from Berlin to Hollywood to follow in the footsteps of Marlene Dietrich and Greta Garbo. Show business voice but not a big belt. Low to Mid-range. Must dance.

Otto Kringelein: Male, late 30s–early 40s, not old but a mortally ill, sickly and dying Jewish bookkeeper from a small town. He is a faithful employee who has cashed in everything for one last chance at life. Sings and dances. Character voice. “Thinner” tenor than the Baron but as high (A). Voice credible as an ailing man who is still engaging in life.

Baron Felix Von Gaigern: Male, 20s-30s, a charming, dashing, handsome, athletic, optimistic yet broke, seductive young man-about-town now down on his luck but struggling to keep up appearances. Must sing and dance. Trained voice, rich, expressive. High tenor. Many high A’s.

Raffaela: Female, 30s-40s, the confidante, secretary and dresser to (and secretly in love with) the great ballerina, Grushinskaya. Passionate and devoted, she has been saving and investing her money in the hope to live out her life with the ballerina in romantic bliss in Italy. Sings, does not dance. Mid-range but rich, elegant, almost an art song voice. Think Elizabeth Schwartzkopf as mezzo or lower. *Russian accent.

Elizaveta Grushinskaya: Female, mid 40s to mid 50s, the fabled Russian ballerina making an eighth farewell tour. Must be able to believably do some bar work and, hopefully, execute some ballet moves. Must sing. This still-beautiful, world-famous, about-to-retire Prima Ballerina requires a convincing French cabaret style ala Edith Piaf. Low to Mid-range. * Russian accent.

The Two Jimmys: Male, late 20s-early 30s, African-American nightclub entertainers from North Carolina and South Carolina, comedic and very charismatic, on the order of the Nicholas Brothers and/or Bobby Short. Excellent singers/dancers. Tenor (high G) & Baritone who can hold a harmony easily.

Bolero Couple:

The Countess: Female, an exotic and mysterious hotel guest. Blind. Does not need to sing but if she does, all the better. Excellent dancer. Strong ballet and partnering background a must as well as ability to execute lifts and performs Bolero/Ballroom dance feature.

The Gigolo: Male, the romantic and masculine hotel guest, devoted partner of the Countess. Does not need to sing but if he does, all the better. Must be an excellent dancer. Strong ballet and partnering background is a must as well as the ability to execute lifts and performs Bolero/Ballroom dance feature.

Madame Peepee: Female, any age, Lavatory Attendant who despises the frivolous ways of the rich. Character voice. Mid-High. D flat in staff.

Zinnowitz: Male, 30s-50s, an attorney in Berlin of somewhat questionable methods. Character voice. Mid- Range or could be “spoken.”

Rohna: Usually male (may cast as female), 40s-50s, hotel general manager, a martinet, the Grand Concierge, predatory and dominating hotel manager, the smiling face and representative of Grand Hotel who is less than ingratiating to the staff behind the scenes. Must sing and dance.

Chauffeur: Male, early 20s-late 30s, gangster posing as a chauffeur, violent, tough and threatening leg breaker for Algerian mob boss. Must sing and dance. *Cockney, Spanish or Italian accent.

Sandor: Male, 30s-50s, a high strung and passionate theatre impresario of a failing ballet company. Sings and dances. *Hungarian accent.

Witt: Male, late 40s-50s, company manager of Grusinkaya’s ballet troupe and warm old friend and associate of the ballerina. Sings and dances.

Trude: Female, early 20s, a maid and friend to Flaemmchen. Also has high aspirations of going to America.

Additional ensemble lines and some small solos for female telephone operators, disgruntled male scullery workers, hotel courtesan, tootsies, bellboys and a detective.

Special note: There are some great dance numbers in this piece, so experienced dancers who can sing in unison are also strongly encouraged to audition. *Accents required only where specified

An original play exploring true, local stories
September 20-23, 27-30; October 4-7, 2012
Directed by Caleb Thurston

A man stands in an Oregon downpour, staring up toward a overcast sky. What is he waiting for? Each long, dark winter we wonder if spring will ever return to the valley. Based on true stories told by diverse residents as well as research of local historical figures, this original play brings to life the tales of Newberg’s dreamers, past and present. The stories of our neighbors promise to surprise and inspire us.

Presented with the collaboration of the Yamhill County Cultural Coalition.

Actress Needed

An experienced film student looking for an actress to perform in a short comedy/satire film that will be done in a semi-documentary style format. The premise follows a young woman, Hayley McCoy, who has fallen madly in love with her car. The piece is filled with comedic bits, poking fun at the perfections and imperfections of relationships through an absurd mode of personification, while making parody of various serious news programs such as "Frontline". Hayley's character is approximately 20-25 years of age and is very upbeat, but obviously very flighty at the same time. I am enthusiastically looking to fill this role and begin shooting on this film as soon as possible. Anyone interested would need their own vehicle (however there will be little actual driving in the piece).

Itch, the short, is a psychological horror story about a young Portland woman who is overwhelmed by changes in her life. Not sure if this qualifies as an audition for your website, but I'll submit it to you all the same.. If you could put it up that'd be great, if not no worries.

We are two creative types (musicians and writers) with a fantastic idea for a musical. Think something along the lines of Hedwig. Looking for a seasoned playwrite to collaborate with and help us bring this idea into a live theater format. Lots of potential here!
