This page contains auditions posted on Thursday, March 31, 2011.
We are already at the end of March, and this Spring is starting to pick up with exciting, professional film work! With the Portland Area Theatre Alliance auditions this weekend, are you participating? Tell us about your experiences preparing, auditioning, and whether you receive callbacks.
Let's continue this chat throughout the week and talk about extra work, student films, and deferred payment gigs. I know that a lot of people have shared their feedback and advice on accepting non-paid work, and there have been quite a few heated arguments on PDX Backstage about this in the past, but how do you feel about deferred payment gigs, where you could possibly do the work if the film has investors involved once they see the final product, or once it hits the film festival circuit. How do you look at extra work, where you are getting visibility on TNT shows, and feature films being shot locally, but you are making minimum wage doing it. Students films have always been encouraged to the actor just starting out because they walk out of it with footage for their reel, but how do you feel about seasoned actors doing student films?
This can be a very touchy subject sometimes because I know that filmmakers are not always able to pay, but they are still producing high quality work, while respecting and featuring their actors involved. Share your thoughts, input, and experiences, and let's start in on this topic for next week a few days early.
If you are a fan of the blog, please share this with actor friends. If you have any feedback for me on how to improve my blog, share this with me so that I may work on improving the blog.
Thanks.

Professional Make-Up/Hair Artist Needed
Hello,
I'm looking for a local make-up and hair artist, who is proficient in doing such art for the film industry.
The last SAG film I worked on, the hair and make-up artist was from LA and very experienced. Waiting around many hours for my one scene, I had lots of time to question and observe this gal's profession. And I learned that there are in fact special techniques and skills to manipulate the make-up on an actress to get the correct effect on camera. These techniques are used even when the director wants a natural look, there is still a lot of make-up involved to get that look.
Anyway, I'm hoping to find the Portland artists who obtain these special techniques for film. I'm a local actress, and interested in contracting out professional H&M stylists for independent projects I have.
I look forward to connecting with local artists.
All my best,
Mckenzie Coffee
Reply to: Please contact me at this email mclee856@hotmail.com, if interested in discussing more details, pay, etc. Additionally, please contact me only if you own the appropriate make-up kit and tools. Thank you kindly.

Bartender
2 Reed Student Lawyers: early 20s
2 Connor’s teammates: 20s
Auditions will be held April 2nd from 9am – 5pm.
Compensation to be negotiated upon contract signing.
At the moment this is a non-union project. We are looking into a possible Ultra Low -Budget agreement with the Screen Actors Guild.
- Compensation will be "negotiated" because we are still working on funding for possible "stipends", ON TOP of "back-end" contracts for main and supporting roles if we receive distribution (which we are working on now). Again there are no promises (which we all know are useless anyway), but we will have written contracts with talent explaining their entitlements upfront...we are looking out for talent on this project. We have already developed a stipend structure and compensation structure, which will be disclosed to the talent at a later date.
- The compensation will be according to the roles (required time and effort)...
- This is a comedy (and clean as well ) so the opportunity for income is greatly affected in a positive way.
- We require NO NUDITY from talent
- There are NO RELIGIOUS slurs or implications so no actor will compromise their personal morality/beliefs
- There is no extremely foul language
- Talent is offered compensation by size of the role (time needed on set), and/or a positively correlated compensation associated with dialogue percentage according to script breakdowns.

Choreographer for Wizard of OZ
Greetings!
I am in dire need of a choreographer for 2 dance pieces for OZ - the Scarecrow/Dorothy Dance & the Jitterbug Dance (we aren't using the entire piece). I know this is insanely short notice, but unfortunately, the choreographer I had lined up has bailed at the last minute.
Our current rehearsal schedule for teaching/working on these dances is:
3/30/11 - 3-5pm
4/6/11 - 3-5pm
4/13/11 - 3-5pm
I can add some time into the schedule, but would need to work that out with the choreographer. There is pay involved! If you are interested & available these dates, please let me know ASAP.
Thank you!

Thanks.

Casting for working title “MOCK TRIALS”
Looking for ensemble cast and supporting roles for feature film to be shot starting June 1st.
Lead Roles:
Jane: early to mid 20s, sweet and supporting. Selfless but secretly ambitious.
Don: early to mid 20s, community college student, pleasant with timid demeanor. He is the underdog and the boy next door.
Mike: early to mid 20s, Snarky and quick witted. Always thinking on his feet and a great friend to Don.
Professor Gavel: early to mid 40s, Disbarred and disenchanted lawyer, jaded by his arch nemesis and society.
Connor: Mid 20s, arrogant, intelligent, and knows nothing about women. Studying law and otherwise ignoring Jane, his girlfriend.
Supporting Roles:
Hal: early to mid 20s, everything stereotypically hipster and Portlandesque.
Leslie: early to mid 20s, nice but a little narcissistic. Desperately seeks attention and dreams of someday being a more fashionable Katie Couric.
Leo Sunderling: 30s, avid bike rider. Normal dude…for Portland.
Judge Sousanis: 50s laid back genuinely interested in educating young people about becoming lawyers. Tries to find the purity in law. Male or Female.
Judge Longenecker: 50s also laid back, but with an eastern Oregon feeling. Says words like “y’all”. Tries to prepare lawyers for those who will try to bend the law. Male or Female.
Sam Speyer: 40s. Female. The arch nemesis to Professor Gavel. Great lawyer who has no problem exploiting the law.
Other Roles:
Joyce: late 30s to early 40s

AUDITIONS: Anonymous Theatre
SECRET SOURCES REVEAL DETAILS FOR ANONYMOUS THEATRE AUDITIONS
Come be a part of the secret...
ABOUT ANONYMOUS THEATRE: A play is selected. Auditions are held. The play is cast. The actors are sworn to secrecy. No one in the cast knows who their fellow performers will be, and they do not reveal their participation in the project to anyone. The actors rehearse one-on-one with the director. Then, on the night of the performance, the cast arrives in street clothes and enters the theatre as if they are members of the audience. They take their seats. They read their programs, chat with their neighbors, and in all ways behave like normal audience members. The house lights dim and the play begins, with each actor delivering his or her first line from the audience. The cast members discover one another's identity for the first time, in front of a live audience!
"...the energy at this show will be electric. Actors rarely get to perform these kind of exhilarating stunts, and audiences rarely get to see them. If the stunt fails, it will fail magnificently, like a daredevil misjudging his leap across that canyon, falling like a dying firefly into a seething abyss."

Thank you to Bobalukeduke for sharing his great feedback and input on working as an extra.
Thanks.

“Men Who Don’t Work” is a short film adapted from Raymond Carver’s “What Do You Do In San Francisco?”
The film centers around a postman who develops a strange curiosity for a family that moves into a house on his route.
The story’s examination of loneliness, regret, and the inherent flaws in all of us provides subject matter that is both challenging and cinematic.
SEEKING TALENT:

Slightly disgruntled and jaded, the postman develops a strange and desperate intrigue for a mysterious family who moves into a house on his route.
BEARDED MAN TO PLAY BROODING BEATNIK (25-40)

2 People To Play Costumed Characters
We're filming a short piece at the Enchanted Forest theme park on Sunday Apr. 3 from 10a-1p. 2 actors are needed to dress in full-body costumes. Options are a Wizard, Polar Bear, Chicken, & Raisin. You will be going around the park looking at things and "goofing" around. This is the reference piece:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZL2WeRHqqXo
The piece is part of a 30 minute homage/parody of 80s kid shows. It is an independent production but the park has given us permission. No real experience necessary and either gender can apply. Keep in mind we will not see your face when shooting. You should be between 5'4 & 6'2 and the costumes can be a bit cumbersome, but we will make sure that you are always comfortable and safe.
We will cover any mileage, food, and also a free trip to a park. Bring the kids if you have them. They can be extras. You'll also get copy & credit once it's done. It should be bizarre and fun. If you have any questions, please contact me. I look forward to hearing from you

Casting A Short Film, Auditions Sunday 3/27 and Sunday 4/3
Thieves is the story of a cat burglar breaking into a sleepy suburban house during the dead of night, intent on acquiring a few valuable paintings. Little does he know that another burglar, far less skilled and refined, has coincidentally decided on breaking into the very same house. They weave in and out of each others path’s, both becoming increasingly confused by the trail the other leaves behind. Eventually the proceedings build to a chaotic climax that leaves both of or hapless housebreakers empty handed.
Roles:
The Professional – Male, 35-50. A veteran criminal, his technique is polished and his skill refined. He’s a fastidious perfectionist, his one vice a tendency to let greed cloud otherwise impeccable judgment. Lithe, graceful and confident, he is the straight man baffled and confused by the strange occurrences unfolding during what should be a routine job. The role is challenging physically, with the performer being called upon to communicate with movement and expression rather than dialogue.
The Amateur – Male, 25-35. Younger and less experience than his criminal counterpart, he shows little caution or forethought and yet chance allows him to evade detection time and again. Careless, impulsive and inexperienced, he is the fool failing to even notice the strange occurrences unfolding around him. The role is challenging physically, with the performer being called upon to communicate with movement and expression rather than dialogue.
The Husband – Male, late 40’s-50’s. The homeowner who’s house is being plundered. He is a well-off executive with a penchant for pretty women and large weapons. Avid hunter and outdoorsman, self-styled man’s man, mid-life crisis sufferer.
The Wife – Female, 20’s. The third wife of our homeowner. Retired model now making her way in life as a trophy wife. Certainly not a helpless damsel in distress, she’s quite able to defend herself.
Production Details:
We are estimating a 6-8 minute running time and the shoot takes place on location during the weekend of the 16th and 17th of April with a location rehearsal on the 9th. It is very much a physical comedy inspired by work from the brilliant Jacques Tati through to the misadventures of great British comedy characters like Mr Bean and Basil Fawlty and features no dialogue.
Drop me an email if you are interested and I'll let you know more about what the audition involves and we'll work out a time you can come by.
Thanks,
Ben

Thanks,
Ben

Auditions: Thursday, March 24, 2011
This page contains auditions posted on Thursday, March 24, 2011.
As we are learning by reading the feedback from those who contributed to this week's discussion, it can be a huge challenge to balance work with play, and it can seem nearly impossible to balance time for yourself and time with family and friends. This is an ongoing struggle I am faced with. When we go too fast and accept every job that comes our way, we tend to burn out and lose energy for other incredible opportunities that come our way.
While some have mentioned that they are not signed with an agency, this means you then must manage your own scheduling. Even those who have an agent have mentioned that they still find much of their work themselves, acting as their own manager. One would think that managing your own workload would allow more free time, but this doesn't ever seem to be the case.
Thank you to those who have already shared stories, experiences, and advice. Let's continue this week's topic of discussion and chat about balancing life with an acting career.
If you are a fan of the blog, please share this with actor friends. If you have any feedback for me on how to improve my blog, share this with me so that I may work on improving the blog.

Hello PDX,
Compass Rep is looking for a 40-50 year-old man to play Florio, the father of the young lovers in our upcoming production of 'Tis Pity She's a Whore.

Rehearsals begin on April 2 and the show opens on May 6. We run through May 29. The show is directed by me.
There is some small money for the role. No AEA this time.
Thanks.

Wednesday, March 23, 2011
Auditions: Wednesday, March 23, 2011
This page contains auditions posted on Wednesday, March 23, 2011.
Thank you to all of the helpful advice in the chat box regarding our topic of discussion this week! Balancing film, friends, and work can be very difficult in this industry, and it's important to remember to stay grounded.
Being that this week is Spring Break for most of the schools in Oregon, there has been a decrease in film auditions this week. I am confident this won't last long, and the blog will be full of great, potential opportunities. Even today, there are quite a few on-camera opportunities.
Let's continue this week's topic of discussion and chat about balancing life with an acting career. For those of you who are making a career out of acting, it can be challenging to find time for a social life, family, and friends who are not a part of the acting world. For those of us who pursue acting as a hobby, it can be a challenge to balance a day job with auditions, rehearsing, and filming. Anyone involved with theater knows that rehearsals may be scheduled every weekday, which minimizes time spent with family and friends outside of acting. Those late night shoots happen when convenient for the filmmakers, and can interfere with local networking events.
Whether you are involved with theater or film, how do you balance your social life and sanity with acting work? Some meditate, others give themselves a day each week devoted to family. Let's hear what your tricks are.
If you are a fan of the blog, please share this with actor friends. If you have any feedback for me on how to improve my blog, share this with me so that I may work on improving the blog.
Thanks.

Call to any actors:
I need three actors for two scenes for a proof of concept video for a commercial. There is no budget yet, so I am prepared to ignore the backlash of people who are going to bash me. No budget means I am not being paid either. This is to prove the concept so as to move forward if the company approves. If you are still with me, the shoots are this week, Thursday and Friday, and flexible to your schedules. If this concept works, I will bring back the people for the paying work. There can be an agreement to such so that people have some security. Contact me here with either a Direct Message or email me. Thanks so much! - Martin Vavra
